Predictions?
Getouddahere!

I was planning
to predict what would happen on the Internet for 2001, but
realized that way lies madness.
After all, last year at this time, Net watchers were all agog
over e-commerce. Amazon.com's chief was Time's Man of the
Year.
And today, the cyberstreets are littered with dot-com corpses.
So who knows? Maybe we're just trying to force our views of
the Internet onto everyone else.
It's a store.
It's a jukebox.
It's a mailbox.
It's cable TV with an infinite number of channels.
It's the world's largest unorganized library.
It's junk mail.
It's corporate takeovers.
It's porn.
It's news.
It's the wave of the future, my friend.
It's the stock market.
The real truth, of course, is that the Internet is whatever
you want it to be, whatever you use it for in you own life.
It's a tool, no more, no less. I still chuckle when I see
"computer forecasts" or "computer analysis." The analysis
is done by humans every time. They just use a computer to
do it.
Just as you use a computer to shop or write e-mail or entertain
yourself. So what will happen this year? Will AOL Time Warner
Turner Taylor Hilton Burton Warner Herbert Walker Cougar Mellencamp
Bush succeed? If so, at what?
Will somebody discover a new technology, a must-have application,
a stunning speed breakthrough?
Ask me next year. For now, I have no idea. After all, at this
time last year, there wasn't a Dot Com Magazine.
