New sites
of all sorts

The Mad Science Club
If you want your children to be stimulated by science, Scholastic has created the Mad Science Club, and each month kids receive projects (geared toward different ages) to carry out at home.

The experiments are fun and easy and require ordinary household objects, in addition to the tools Scholastic sends in its introductory packet. Visit the company's Web site at www.scholastic.com/athomeclubs for more information.

Merchants learn how to combat online fraud
The Worldwide E-Commerce Fraud Prevention Network has taken the first step in its mission to rid the Net of fraudulent e-commerce transactions. The group's fraud prevention Web site (www.merchantfraudsquad.com) provides expert advice to merchants about how to fight the unauthorized use of credit card numbers and other payment types to purchase goods and services.

Included on the site are five tools for preventing the use of stolen credit cards online; tips on secure Web hosting; how to effectively report online crime; an article on the future use of e-signatures for fraud prevention; and consumer tips for shopping safely online. The Worldwide E-Commerce Fraud Prevention Network was formed by American Express, Amazon.com, buy.com, Expedia.com and others.

New York Review of Books
The New York Review began during the New York publishing strike of 1963 and now has a national circulation of more than 115,000. According to a description on the Web site, the New York Review is the journal in which Ralph Nader published his "manifesto" for consumer justice; I.F. Stone investigated the lies of Watergate; John K. Galbraith analyzed the ailing economy under Carter and the Reagan recovery; and Nadine Gordimer and Bishop Desmond Tutu wrote from South Africa on the conflict over apartheid.

Welcome to Motel Americana

Motel Americana welcomes you to its Web site with a flashing neon sign. It celebrates not the shiny modern motel but the classic lines of the inexpensive roadside stopover. It's meant for those who like to see the places they are driving through, those parts of the country the freeway traveler passes in a blur.

You can read many motel stories from contributors from all over the country, search for motels by state, or just chuckle at a little motel humor. The site, www.sjsu.edu/faculty/wooda/motel.html, is maintained by Jenny and Andy Wood, a San Jose (Calif.) State University communications studies assistant professor.

The Web site at Pooh Corner
This site is dedicated to the wonderful stories found in "Winnie-The-Pooh" and "The House at Pooh Corner," written by A.A. Milne and illustrated by E.H. Shepard.

These books were first published in the 1920s, and star the familiar characters of Piglet, Owl, Rabbit, Tigger, Kanga, Roo, Eeyore, Christopher Robin and Edward Bear, commonly known as Winnie-the-Pooh.

Skeptic's Dictionary
From the virgin birth to UFOs, this unflinching dictionary, one of the first books written expressly for publication on the Web, takes on fringe science and concepts of faith with a scientific eye. There are more than 400 entries designed to shed light on practices, miracles, and events that are part of our popular culture and belief system.

The Skeptic's Dictionary takes on the Easter Bunny, ESP, divining rods, and transmutations, among others, putting together the best skeptical literature on the subject.

Whether you agree or disagree with his positions, you have to admire the scope of the author's mission, made even more urgent, because of the proliferation of "New Age fantasies and illusions," as Robert Caroll calls them.

Hawaiian Food and Cuisine
If you're stuck in a cold spot this week, consider warming your imagination at the Hawaiian Food and Cuisine spot. Judy Vorfeld has assembled some links to sites specializing in the cooking of our 50th state, where temperatures all year round average in the perfect 70s.

Find items like Mango Bread, Kamaboko Salad, Banana Pie, and Haupia Cake.

Nuts and Bolts of College Writing
Although this site is ostensibly aimed at college students, anyone can pick up writing tips here.

This online resource has a great visual and verbal approach, it's easy and fun to read, and is useful for everything from college admission applications to essays and letters.

The Nuts and Bolts of College Writing can also be purchased in book form.
