Editor's notebook

Is our beta test over yet?

By Ray Barrington
Dotcom Editor

It's been said a year of Internet time is equivalent to seven years of traditional time.

The reference, of course, is to the speedy development of the system. Miss a year and you might as well be seven years behind. Just look at the program numbers. We're up to AOL 6.0, Netscape 6 and Internet Explorer 5.

So, I guess, this is Dot Com 1.1 - it's our first anniversary. Actually, after stepping in as editor following the first few issues, I started to think that a week on Dot Com was like seven weeks of working on something else. That's what it's like when everything is new.

Some things were there right away. We've had great advertising support from the first day. Folks have asked to write for us for the joy of sharing what they know.

We helped get the wi.northeastern.talk newsgroup on a major state Internet provider.

We've already done two cover stories on viruses, and I wouldn't be surprised to see more in the next year.

But we've also done stories on local businesses and how they use the World Wide Web to get business done.

We've added more consumer-oriented Internet stories, but we also have nuts-and-bolts articles for the technically-inclined. Still, we have articles explaining the basics for those who are just discovering this magic tool.

Of course, the Cyberpunk is a year older. A year wiser? We'll see. And we'd love suggestions. Our address is all over the place, and my e-mail is at the bottom of this column.

An old boss of mine once said the best test of a publication is for the reader to finish reading an article and remark "wow, I didn't know that."

We hope you find that every month. And if you know something we don't, tell us.
