Confessions of a cyberpunk

Burn, baby, burn

BOO-YA! Hi. How are you? Yeah, I'm pretty good, thanks for asking. How's the weather? I'm sitting here staring at the screen, hoping that I don't run out of things to talk about. I even took off my ring thinking that it possessed evil powers that prevented the free flowing of thoughts, and so far, it's kind of working. Well let's see what I come up with.

As you may or may not know, last month was my birthday and I used a little of the B-Day cash to get myself a SEGA Dreamcast. Now unless you're under the age of 27 you probably don't use a Dreamcast or don't know what one is. Dreamcast is just another one of them video game systems, but this one can do a little more than the average system.

Dreamcast (DC) has been going down the tubes lately. Sega is canceling further production of the system fairly soon, but that's no reason not to invest. You can buy one these days for $100, which isn't bad at all. As far as I can tell, it's going to be one of the last systems you'll be able to copy games for. Personally, I'm not one to want to shell out 50 bucks for a video game. Why buy the cow when you can have the milk for free? Anyway, half the games out there aren't worth buying.

Outside of Playstation 2's feature to double as a DVD player, systems of the past didn't have much to offer besides games. With a cable modem, a CD-R, a DC, and a little know-how it's capable of so much more. There's a program out there that will let you burn CDs playable for DC that contain movies or TV shows or any sort of .mpg (video file) that you want to watch on your DC. This program called GypPlay (available in the Tools section at http://www.boob.co.uk) will do the magic for you. A fairly self-explanatory user interface makes it easy for you to convert a gaming system into a CD-VCR. Usually you're able to fit about 2-3 decent looking TV shows, and part of a movie on a CD, so it's not a bad deal. Now the quality of the video varies of the file you got it from originally. In my day I-ve seen some good-looking vids, and some shoddy-looking ones. I'm not making any guarantees on the quality here.

To play the illicit videos, you'll need to get the Utopia Boot Loader, which is also available at the same site. Just burn the Loader on to a CD, and then pop that in before you put in the movie, and you're good to go. GypPlay comes with a lot of features that come standard to any VCR (fast forward, rewind, etc.) It also comes with the ability to skip the whole file (like skipping a track on a CD). It's almost like a VCR/DVD hybrid, wooyeah!

Now for your listening pleasure, you can also turn your DC into a mp3 machine. If you're too lazy to switch out your CDs you can download DCMP3, which is also available at that same site. This program, you just burn on to a CD with all the mp3s you want to listen to and it does the rest. Like GypPlay, it requires the loader, but that's not too big of a deal. You can usually cram about 200-250 mp3s on to one CD. All the advanced things you can do with it are described in the "read me" file that comes with it. A handy little program for those of you who still don't use your computer as your stereo.

Finally I'm going to quickly discuss CD burning in general. Now if you don't really know how to use a computer, you should just stick to the software that came with your CD-R, but if you want to do all the cool things, I have to recommend a program to you. Disc Juggler is one of the few programs out there with the RAW burn which copies everything on the original CD to the copy, even bad sectors which most programs will not write. This is necessary to copy Dreamcast games. Also it allows you to over-burn CDs which means that you can actually cram more that 74 minutes of music onto a CD.

It has an intermediate interface, but 7 of 63 lab monkeys can operate Disc Juggler. It's available at http://www.padus.com for a price tag of $79 bucks (or nothing if you are swindly) and it's a really good buy. This is the only CD-R software you should ever need. Besides, people will think you're cool whenthey see you aren't using the idiot-proof Adaptec software.

Well that's it, I'm done. I tell you, I just don't know about this one. For some odd reason it just doesn't have the flair that it usually does, or did it? I don't know, so give me some feedback. After all, I do this for the reader, not for my health.

Well actually, I'm in it for the girls, but it's kinda for the readers, I guess. I feel that I should close this absolutely fabulous Dot Com Cyberpunk edition with the infamous use of worthless and unnecessary use of adjectives and abundance of run-on sentences that make this article highly respected and adored throughout parts of the Philippines and Portugal.

The Cyberpunk is known on the street as Dusty Kraft. Swooning babes can e-mail him at [email protected]
