Are we going too far with technology?

Hey Green Bay! Well, March has come and gone and I am as sick of snow as I possibly could be. I was recently in Florida where it was 85 degrees and sunny. What a change that I had to come back to this, ice and snow storms in March. It was the first time I had been on a plane since the attacks. I was pretty impressed with the security, and the safety technology they had. For those of you who travel on a daily or weekly basis, you're used to the X-ray machines and random bag searches. Soon they'll be able to scan your entire identity from medical conditions to traffic ticket violations.

What is going on with technology lately? I have been raised in such a diverse world that is constantly generating knowledge towards a "better future." Our techno-based society has finally come to survey ethics, morals, and mother nature itself. Those movies we watched with such cynicism such as "Total Recall" or the more recent "AI: Artificial Intelligence" are now becoming more of a reality. Will we soon be over-populated by the very technology we gave birth to? It's a catch 22; without the technology we have today we would not be able to treat the illnesses and disease that would very well destroy us. Yet we continue to look for the bigger and better ways to improve an artificial being with intelligence superior or equivalent to ours own. Could you imagine more Britney Spears or Tom Greens running around? We're not that far from that; somehow they found a way to fool mother nature and create the ability to clone a human. To be honest that is freakin' scary. Trust me the world can't handle more of me nor more of anyone else I know. And there is always that "American way" of letting it get in the wrong hands. Can you imagine the chaos of more than one bin Laden?

Back to the security thing, have you heard of the Digital Angel? It's a personal tracking and recovery system that can be implanted into humans. It has a miniature digital transceiver and can last for years without any maintenance. It can be inserted under the skin in your arm, hip, or shoulder. The transceiver sends and receives data and can be tracked continuously with Global Positioning Satellite technology. Some parents have already taken the extreme to monitor their kids and put a tracking device in their cars, which can monitor their location on the Web any time. With the Digital Angel, they can detect medical emergencies as it has the ability to watch your heart rate. The hope is to one day be rushed to the hospital and all they would do is scan your arm and "poof" your entire medical history appears on their screen. No more insurance papers and questions from the nurses such as "Are you allergic to any medications?" Again, if in the wrong hands it can violate our privacy. Anybody could find out all of your personal information and use that to their own no good. They are pushing these beneficial attributes: providing a tamper-proof means of locating and identifying individuals from e-business and e-commerce security, locating individuals (including children who have been lost or abducted), monitoring medical conditions, tracking and locate military, diplomatic and other essential government personnel, determining the location or the authenticity of valuable property, and last but not least tracking those risk-taking sports enthusiasts.

It's all scary to me but you make your own decision. Is the good of all of these technology break-throughs worth the risk of losing our identity and privacy privileges we have in the United States of America?
