Sites to see

A chicken with pluck
Murray is one chicken who won't be coming home to roost for some time. He's a stuffed rooster from Canada, making the rounds of denizens of an online chat room. He's already visited Wisconsin (he had a great time at a Brewers game) and is headed elsewhere. You can follow his travels at www.murraythechicken.com.

Speaking of chickens...

"Click, Crack and Cook" is the theme at www.eggsite.com. No, not the search engine excite.com. This site from the Ontario Egg Producers offers meal planners, recipes and cooking tips. Who says use of the Internet is limited to eggheads?

Dead Web sites memorial
The Museum of E-Failures at http://www.disobey.com/ghostsites/index.shtml now boasts over 350 Web home pages that were the last gasps of dying dot-coms. Webmaster Steve Baldwin has collected the final Web home pages of the doomed.

They range from sad farewells ("The end of a dream, but at least we tried" - Animalassist.com) to those that continue to operate on autopilot where the lights are on, but no one is home.

World Wide Web cams
A site at http://dove.net.au/~punky/World.html offers a map of the world with clickable links to Web cams located across the planet.

Europe and North America have their own submaps since there are so many Web cams in those areas, while others may have just one cam for hundreds of miles - like the one in Nuuk, Greenland, which faithfully monitors a remote and quiet little village on the coast. The Davis Station Web cam, Antarctica, takes a picture every hour except for the times when snow covers the lens.

Science friction Besides their ostensible interest in matters related to the nation's health, what's something the American Cancer Society, the American Medical Association and the American Heart Association have in common? According to information available at a new Web site, www.integrityinscience.org, they've all received large donations in return for endorsing products. Created by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, the site hopes to lift the "veil of secrecy," which often hides relationships between large corporations and health and nonprofit organizations. Known for working to win passage of legislation requiring the "Nutrition Facts" food label, the Center for Science in the Public Interest does not accept funding from industry or government.

Movies B' Good
There are films and there are movies. There are movies and there are B-movies! "B-movies have long been ignored by the critics and award-givers, but audiences love them and have kept the B-movies alive all of these years," says Ron Bonk, curator of the online B-Movie Hall of Fame, www.b-movie.com/hof/vote.html, where voting is under way for its fourth annual inductions. Visitors to the site can vote on two ballots listing 100 B-movies and 100 B-movie personalities. Don't be surprised to see some A-list actors and directors among the nominees. Voting ends Aug. 15, and winners will be announced Sept. 15-16 during the B-Movie Film Festival in the B-movie capital of the world, Syracuse, N.Y.

When Sharks Attack
On a Web site sponsored by the Florida Museum of Natural History, the International Shark Attack File (ISAF) logs a total of 79 unprovoked shark attacks in 2000 - the highest number since it began recording such statistics in 1958 - and singles out the shark-attack hot spots.

Ten attacks were fatal, which the ISAF said mirrored the 12.7 percent average for the last decade. If those numbers worry you, the ISAF offers tips on how to avoid shark attacks (beyond simply not visiting Australia). Happily, some of the techniques, such as avoiding waters "with known effluents or sewage," coincide with our own swimming preferences. Visit www.flmnh.ufl.edu/fish/Sharks/ISAF/ISAF.htm.

Internet Traffic Report
Is your e-mail or Web surfing slow? This site won't cure your problem, but it will help you to determine whether it's your Internet service provider or a regional problem that's making your Internet access slower than molasses in winter. The portal collates data from just about every source going and presents it in graphic form, with drill down information, to allow rapid access to Internet statistics.
