While
The Green Bay News-Chronicle celebrated anniversaries in
November - marking its own 29th - it missed one.
For
it was in 1996 that the News-Chronicle started its own Web
site.
It started with the Web site of the N-C's sister paper,
the Door County Advocate. Jeremy Shaw, who still runs our
site, got things started.
Soon,
we had an Internet connection in the office. Plans were
made.
At first, the plan was for the page to be updated once a
week, late Saturday night; it would be our "Sunday
Edition." In fact, there may
be an Internet directory or two that lists our site that
way.
But
1996 happened to be the year the Green Bay Packers went
to the Super Bowl for the first time in 30 years. There
was a huge demand
for information. Slow, orderly progress went out the window.
By November,
we were doing a mid-week update with Packers information
and a Monday update with game news. By the end of December
we were updating almost every day. By Super Bowl week we
were running same-day pics from New Orleans.
And
we never really slowed back down.
Gradually,
things have been added. The front page includes weather,
links to all our columnists, a variety of helpful options,
and a
quick read on the main headlines.
Packers
coverage includes links to papers in every NFL city, taped
comments from the Packers themselves, and much more.
Forums
cover issues including the Fox River cleanup, the Packers,
movie comments and local government.
And
there's plenty of information about Green Bay in the "Our
Town" section.
Need I add that you can find Dot Com there as well?
Not
everything in the daily edition is on line, but much of
it is. It's definitely read worldwide.
Happy
anniversary.
