More confessions of a cyber punk

By Dusty Kraft

My computer sleeps about as much as an over-worked cow that's chained to a milking machine, but in my case, the computer isn't chained to a milking machine, it's the Internet.

If there is a moment when our phone line is not in use and I'm home, I'm already logging on-line. This kind of Internet addiction poses a single question, what do I do with all that time?

Lazy Sundays, so many hours with simply nothing to do. With any luck I'll be sleeping off the previous night and arise at around noon, the average waking time for the Generation Y'er. Without even giving a thought to my personal stench, I turn on the computer to see what can occupy my time.

I check my mail; nothing there, not a surprise. With all my console video games not interesting me, I hop on the Internet and go to my personal favorite search engine. I type in "SNES ROMS" which are console games, in this case Super Nintendo games, that have been transferred to the computer to be used with another program called an emulator, which emulates the console environment. Basically it's another way to play games for free.

Yahoo brings up a lot of results, but I choose to go to a site called Plasticman's Emulation Zone (http://www.plasticman.org). With this site I choose one of over 500 games to download. This time it's Secret of Mana 2, a Japanese game that was never released in the US. I decide to do something about my hygiene while I download, it only takes about 15 minutes to download in a worst case scenario.
After I'm clean and smelling good, I go back to the computer and unzip the game and load it up on an emulator and begin playing while I download some select tunes. About an hour into the game I grow bored and decide to speed things up a bit so I log on to GameFAQs (http://www.gamefaqs.com) and search for my current gaming quest. I get some codes and hints and apply them to my current adventure. Not
a half an hour later the game is no longer a challenge, so I grow bored once again and quit the program.

I hit up the Internet once more and go to eBay (http://www.ebay.com) to see what kind of hot deals I can get. I search "Car CD Players" and bid on one that looks good. Granted you are supposed to be 18 to do that, but no one but me knows that I'm not 18, and I always get outbid anyway. It's just the thrill of buying that gets me going.

I've never won a bid, thus I've never bought anything, but it entertains me anyway.
Done with my shopping experience I think I'll work on my Web page a bit. I've yet to upload it to any server, but I make neat graphics and a sharp looking page, but I never have anything to say, so I just leave it sit in the "Web Page" folder on my computer, maybe one day I'll upload it for fun.

Meanwhile I decide to see how my music is doing on MP3.com (http://www.mp3.com) and look at my personal stats. They're pretty low considering I've only three songs and I haven't done any promotional things in quite some time, but nonetheless Fusion Core (http://www.mp3.com/fusioncore) is up on a site with music available
for all to see. I do my own mixing and tracking whenever I get a musical revelation.

While my mind set is still on music I switch over to look up some concert dates on Pollstar (http://www.pollstar.com) and search my favorite bands and venues. Some good shows, I'll probably make a point of trying to go see them.

I also check out The Rave's Web site (http://www.therave.com) since it's my personal favorite venue in Wisconsin. A band that I like just happens to be playing soon, good news for me. So I send e-mail and instant messages to my friends hoping to leech a ride off one of them.

I also send an additional message to my brother to see if I can crash with him in the dorms down in Milwaukee. I chat for awhile, and then decide to catch up on some literature, therefore I log-on to The Onion (http://www.theonion.com) to read some pretty sweet stories; it is a true favorite site of mine.

By now it's a solid 8 or 9 o'clock in the evening so I talk with the boys and girls online for a few hours.

Before I sleep I make sure I'm getting the happening tunes to throw onto a CD to play in my new set of hot wheels, a car truly worthy of a style-minded man of the cruise like myself. This way when I get a stereo to justify the car, I will most definitely have the popular tunes that will attract those lady friends.
