Nancy Malewiski, 405 Woodrow St., became the first woman to hold the office of Village President, in an election win over William Kane Tuesday. Malewiski, a current village trustee, defeated Kane, 290-138.
"I'm mildly surprised but greatly appreciative that the people of the community have this much faith in me," Malewiski said. "I honestly had no idea how people felt because a village president is different than a trustee."
Malewiski, who is also involved with the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, the Viking Rescue Squad board of directors and the Denmark Community Business Association, pledged to focus on economic development and maintaining a low tax rate. Her goals include exploring tax credit opportunities for building maintenance and to find new revenues other than tax money.
In addition she hopes to lead the board in increased involvement in private development projects and put municipal regulations into ordinances related to such developments. "I'll try the best I can for the people of this community and if they have any concerns, feel free to call me." Malewiski said.
