Thomas Lund admitted Tuesday night he was a little surprised to defeat a two-term incumbent in his first crack at political office.
"But I feel like the voters really voted for the issues," Lund said after he heard he was elected Suamico Town Chairman, beating incumbent Ed McAllister 1,115 to 745.
He said a grass-roots style campaign seemed to work with Suamico voters. I was really pleased by the support I got," Lund said. "I got out to a lot of houses, talked to a lot of people.
"I was pleased the campaign didn't go into mudslinging, that we ran an issues-oriented campaign."
Controversy had arisen in the town in the last month over a proposed subdivision ordinance. It would have required any real estate development to include greenspace equal to 50 percent of the land needed for the development itself.
"The subdivision issue was huge, the biggest issue," Lund said. "I didn't like how restrictive it was. My first priority is to get an ordinance through in the next 60 days. We're going to get a steering committee together to work on this."
He said what he perceived as lack of communication between town government and its residents was another reason for his election.
In other town of Suamico results, Sups. Jerry Poels and Julie Laubenstein were re-elected after running unopposed, garnering 1,148 and 1,133 votes respectively.
