Nextel opens office, launches local service

News-Chronicle

A donation of phones to the Boys' & Girls' Club marks the occasion Nextel Partners officially opens its Green Bay area office at 1641 Commanche Ave., Ashwaubenon, today with the launch of service for its all-digital wireless network in Eastern Wisconsin.

The Kirkland, Wash.-based company exclusively provides digital wireless communications using the Nextel brand name of communications services in 30 states.

It calls its service "four-in-one" digital wireless service in its press release. It offers digital cellular; Nextel Direct Connect digital two-way radio; Nextel Wireless Web; and text/numeric messaging services in one piece of equipment, a compact phone.

Customers will be able to access these services anywhere on a Nextel or Nextel Partners digital wireless network, which has a presence in 186 of the country's 200 top markets.

Some of the regional markets with Nextel or Nextel Partners coverage include Milwaukee, Madison, Eau Claire, La Crosse and Superior; Minneapolis-St. Paul, Duluth, Winona and Rochester, Minn.; Des Moines, Waterloo, Cedar Rapids and Dubuque, Iowa; and Chicago.

Among the benefits the service provides is through Nextel Direct Connect, which lets its users communicate with anywhere from one to 100 people in its service area at the same time at the touch of one button and a fraction of the average cellular call cost, the company claims.

It also offers Nextel Business NetworksSM, which connects members for instant updates on program status, whereabouts of associates or supplies and more.

To help launch the service, the first of its kind in the area, Nextel Partners is donating 10 phones and one year of free service to the Boys' & Girls' Club of Green Bay, at an estimated value of $15,000.

The presentation will take place at the East Side Boys' & Girls' Club, 1451 University Ave., with Mayor Paul Jadin, Chief of Police James Lewis and Green Bay Packers first-round draft selection Jamal Reynolds scheduled to appear.

Ray Bodnar is the general manager of the Ashwaubenon office. For more information, call 592-1600.
