Police back to 'square one' on double murders

Vazquez pleads innocent to an attempted homicide charge

By Warren Bluhm
News-Chronicle

As a suspect in a De Pere shooting entered an innocent plea Tuesday, Green Bay police were starting over in their investigation of a double murder a month ago.

Luis Angel Vazquez-Rivera, who was arrested and charged under the name Joel Aponte-Morales, entered his plea before Brown County Circuit Judge William Griesbach, who scheduled a trial for Oct. 24.

Vazquez is charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide for allegedly shooting Steve Nicholas in the arm outside Baba Louie's in the early morning hours of July 19. The bullet entered Nicholas' chest, but his wound was not considered life-threatening.

Defense attorney Ralph Sczygelski argued for a lower bail - Vazquez is being held in lieu of $500,000 cash - but Griesbach let bond stand at that level.

Vazquez, 24, and two other men have been questioned about the shooting deaths of two Green Bay men whose bodies were found four hours before the incident in De Pere.

Authorities have said they are investigating the extent of all three men's involvement in the shooting deaths of Brandon R. Martin, 23, and Ladell W. Smith, 25, of Sauk Village, Ill., in the Whispering Oaks apartment complex on Green Bay's West Side.

The other suspects - Brian Story, 25, and Benjamin Betts, 22 - are also being held on high bail while awaiting court action on charges unrelated to the murders. Vazquez testified last week after being granted immunity about Betts' alleged cocaine dealing.

"We have drawn no conclusions, so we are starting from square one" on the murder investigation, Green Bay police spokesman Lt. Bill Galvin said Tuesday.

That involves re-interviewing some people who have already been interviewed about the case.

"We're finding out not everyone was truthful with us the first time around," Galvin said. "We're dealing with some hard-core folks from the Chicago and Milwaukee area here."

Betts has asked for a substitution of judges to hear his trial on a cocaine delivery charge. Story is scheduled to enter a plea Aug. 27 on charges of on charges of possession with intent to deliver cocaine, possession of a firearm by a felon, carrying a concealed weapon, and having sex with a minor age 16 or older.
