Alertness on the part of Ashwaubenon Public Safety officials helped lead to the arrest of a Green Bay armed robbery suspect Sunday night.
Manfred McGee-Bey, 43, Ashwaubenon, is accused of robbing the Mason Brothers Red Owl grocery store, 923 Ninth St., Sunday afternoon. He appeared in Brown County court Monday to face charges of robbery, fleeing an officer, first-degree recklessly endangering safety and possession of marijuana.
He allegedly held up the store at gunpoint. No shots were fired and no one was injured. An undetermined amount of cash was taken.
Ashwaubenon Public Safety Lt. Ken Raupach said a description of the suspect was sent to area law enforcement agencies shortly after the robbery.
"Green Bay had witnesses, even had his name," Raupach said. "Our dispatcher started looking through our computer and discovered a gentleman by the same name lived on Viking Drive."
Raupach said an Ashwaubenon patrol car was sent to McGee-Bey's address for surveillance purposes until a Green Bay patrol car could arrive. But McGee-Bey showed up before the Green Bay squad car did, at about 7:19 p.m. Sunday.
He said the Ashwaubenon officer attempted a traffic stop on McGee-Bey, but the suspect took off and led police on a high-speed chase through the southern residential and industrial areas of the village. His car was stopped at the intersection of Circle Drive and Ridge Road at about 7:27 p.m.
According to Green Bay Police Captain Greg Urban, police have the car and the gun they believe were used in the robbery.
McGee-Bey is being held in Brown County jail on a $100,000 cash bond.
