Brown County Sheriff's Department investigators had been hoping not to announce the arrest of Mistye Doughty until Monday, but the news of her apprehension was released in Milwaukee, so a brief statement was issued in Green Bay late Friday afternoon.
Doughty, 41, was charged with the theft of jewelry from Douglas Tappa, whose body was found in his Allouez home on Jan. 10.
Capt. Craig Kohlbeck of the sheriff's department emphasized that Doughty is charged with robbery, and the investigation into Tappa's death is continuing. He declined to elaborate.
Brown County investigators took Doughty into custody with the help of the Milwaukee Police Department on Friday morning. She is expected to make an appearance in Brown County Circuit Court on Monday, at which time Kohlbeck said more information may be released.
Tappa, whose nickname was "Colonel Diamond Doug," operated a jewelry business out of his home. At the time authorities said it was not clear whether anything had been stolen.
"We did that on purpose, and it worked," Kohlbeck said. Police routinely withhold from the public information about a crime that would only be known to the perpetrator, for investigative purposes.
