A number of patrons were forced to evacuate the Best Western Washington Street Inn, 321 S. Washington St., after a fire broke out in the basement Tuesday night.
Green Bay firefighters were called to the scene at about 8:12 p.m. Tuesday when people noticed smoke. People staying in the motel, including several in the pool area, were asked to leave while firefighters worked on the blaze.
The fire was extinguished a short time later, and at about 8:32 p.m., firefighters were ventilating the smoke and picking up the hose lines.
Fire battalion chief David Riebe said at about 8:30 p.m. he expected patrons to be evacuated for about another 20 or 30 minutes. Many of them were drivers for Schneider National, he said.
Riebe said the cause of the fire had not been determined, but will remain under investigation. The extent or cost of the damages also was not known.
He said there were no serious injuries during the fire or evacuation.
