KEWAUNEE - A July 11 preliminary hearing has been set in Kewaunee County Circuit Court for a Fond du Lac truck driver facing three felony counts of homicide by negligient driving in connection with the traffic deaths of a Casco man and two of his stepchildren.
Daniel J. Lemke, 42, could face up to six years in prison if convicted. Lemke made his initial court appearance Thursday and remains free on a $75,000 signature bond.
The fatal crash occurred around 4 p.m. May 22 at the intersection of County C and County K in the town of Lincoln. The traffic report states Lemke was driving west on K when he allegedly failed to stop for the stop sign.
The truck collided with a car driven by Roderick A. Guilette, 36, who was heading north on C. Guilette and his two passengers - Alisha Bethel, 12, and Heidi Bethel, 7 - died from their injuries. Lemke was not physically hurt.
According to the criminal complaint, two witnesses driving near the crash scene told police Lemke didn't stop at the intersection. Lemke also told a Luxemburg Rescue ambulance operator he did not see the stop sign, the complaint said.
The court document said that in an interview with a Wisconsin State Patrol inspector, Lemke stated he applied his brakes, but he may not have done so until he was in the intersection.
The fatal intersection has been part of a detour this spring because State 54 has been closed to through traffic between Luxemburg and Casco for bridge replacement work.
