He says a Thompson administration would be free from corruption

Ed Thompson, Libertarian candidate for governor, held a series of news conferences around the state Monday, including one in downtown Green Bay, to name Bryan Olen as his Milwaukee County campaign coordinator.

Olen was a leader of the grass-roots recall of former Milwaukee County Executive F. Thomas Ament. While Ament resigned before the recall could be completed, Thompson said the effort was a large step towards ending government corruption in the state.

Olen became the youngest school board president in the state of Wisconsin in 1993 at age 23. He served on the Cudahy School Board from 1991 to 1999.

Thompson called Olen "the best person we could possibly have" to run the campaign in the state's largest county.

The former mayor of Tomah said his plan as governor would be to make politicians responsible for their spending of state funds.

"I will demand accountability ... (and) will question every dollar spent," Thompson said.

The Thompson campaign will offer people different views of government, he said: "We want a chance to offer people a change."

He added that a Thompson administration would be free from corruption and scandal, such as the pension dispute that led to Ament's resignation. Thompson said he sees elected officials drifting from their purpose once elected.

"Politicians ... forget why they are elected," he said. "The reform they talk about is only lip service."

Thompson made it clear he is not a career politician, but a concerned citizen who sees room for change.

The race for governor will be decided Nov. 5.
