Champs and chumps

News-Chronicle

Champs

McDermott, Ohio Northwest High School senior and halfback on its football team Jake Porter never missed a practice and was dressed for every game, yet he never got into an official game. Porter is developmentally disabled, and coaches didn't want to risk getting him injured...

So a few days before Northwest's final home game of the year, coach Dave Frantz talked to the coach of its opponent, Derek DeWitt of Waverly, and asked if Porter could take a handoff and kneel down with the ball on the game's final play, if the game was not at stake...

Instead, at DeWitt's suggestion, Porter took the handoff on the game's final play with the score 42-0 in Waverly's favor, the 21 other players on the field moved to the side, and after some confusion Porter ran 49 yards for a touchdown he'll never forget, with fans, coaches and players on both sides running along and cheering him every step of the way. A heartwarming story like this is worth using up the space normally reserved here for other Champs.

Chumps

40 percent of possible Brown County voters turned out for Tuesday's election. Where were the other 60 percent who had the chance to renovate state government?

Yeah, Halloween parties in Madison have always been some of the wilder ones around. But is that an excuse to go on a window-breaking, fire-setting rampage, as happened Sunday morning when the bars and police apparently tried to shut the party down after hours? We hope the rioters had all kinds of party-like fun being handcuffed and dragged off to jail.

Speaking of breaking up parties, the Racine Police Department wrote 441 tickets to guests of an alleged "rave" party last weekend, just for violating the city ordinance of being a "patron of a disorderly house." The fines were at least $968 in every case. If the Racine City Council was running Green Bay, 63,284 people would have been ticketed at the Monday night Packer game because of 70-some people getting drunk, rowdy and urinating in the men's room sinks.
