The Hmong community is coming together to help out the Ly family, which lost its home in a fire Thursday morning.
Chia Ly is the past president of the Hmong Association, a position she held from 1999-2001. She lived in the home at 1187 Tilkens St. with her husband, Teng, and their five children.
No one was home when the fire started just before 9 a.m. The house was destroyed. The Green Bay Fire Department valued the damage at $68,600.
The cause of the fire has not been determined, and firefighters stayed on the scene long after the fire was extinguished to catch "hot spots" as they flared up.
Current Hmong Association President Karl Thoj said the association decided to create a fund to help the family right after they heard about the fire. Thoj said Chia Ly just opened Five-Star Oriental food store in November and put a lot of money into the project.
"She has given so much to the community," Thoj said.
Thoj said Chia Ly works for the Green Bay School District and Teng Ly works for Procter & Gamble.
