Many people enjoy volunteering, but not everyone has a great deal of time to devote to it every week.
Despite holding down full-time jobs and raising families, some people still enjoy lending a helping hand where they can, knowing every bit they give helps the people that need it. Computer specialist Don Pavelka is one of those people.
For many years, Pavelka has offered his time and efforts to a number of volunteer-fueled causes, most currently to Green Bay Community Theatre.
Pavelka works with the computer system at the theater, taking care of its software, networking and other projects.
"I enjoy helping them out because (the work) is part of what I do," said Pavelka. "I also feel good knowing that I'm helping someone make else's easier."
Not every volunteer organization can afford to hire someone in Pavelka's line of work. Technology issues can be especially difficult for nonprofits because it can be expensive to operate.
"I recently had to remove a virus from the system there," said Pavelka. "It was rather painstaking because it took removing the software and reformatting the hard drives to remove it, which of course also means reinstalling all the software. Things like that can take a lot of time to remove, but that's one less problem they should have to worry about."
With Pavelka's work schedule and other demands, he still finds at least two days a week to help out the group, which he admits can get challenging.
"It's one of those things where you wind up making your own schedule," said Pavelka. "Sometimes it makes things easier, other times it can get tricky. That's where prioritizing helps out most, I guess."
The new season at Green Bay Community Theatre is just around the corner, which means it will need help in a number of areas. Volunteer opportunities include promotional efforts, including preparing mailings, posters and table tents, as well as other office duties.
The theater needs ushers for its upcoming show, the David Ives comedy "All in the Timing," which plays April 25 through May 11, Thursdays through Sundays.
"It's going to be a busy and exciting season for us," said Susan Currie of Green Bay Community Theatre. "Any help we get will help out wonderfully."
