News-Chronicle
Champs Congratulations to new Brown County Executive Carol Kelso and new Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt. The News-Chronicle looks forward to what you can do to put forth your visions of local government during the next four years. Just remember - we'll be keeping an eye on you! The Green Bay City Council made two decisions that appear contrary but in reality are very good, we think. It approved selling the downtown Younkers building to local developer Thomas Juza Acquisitions for $1.5 million; it also sent a similar $1.5 million sale proposal of the Boston Store to a local business back to committee because another local developer expressed interest in the site for the same price. We think competition can only make the eventual plan for the Boston Store better. Instead of contracting with independent pathologists on an as-needed basis, about nine counties in Northeast Wisconsin (including Brown) have indicated they will consider forming a coalition to hire a regional pathologist who will work specifically for the coalition. Sounds more efficient, probably will save money... hmm, maybe there's something to this consolidation thing. Chumps Is it becoming redundant for us to Chump the people who don't vote after every election, as we've traditionally done? Naah, they have it coming. With the two most powerful positions in Brown County on the line Tuesday, and no incumbents seeking to stay in office, 72 percent of the county's registered voters should be ashamed of themselves. What is going on in the Village of Hobart? Yes, there's several controversial issues happening there, and we have a certain amount of sympathy and respect for the concerned citizens who are doing their homework and voicing their opinions on those issues. But shouting matches, police calls and people storming out in a fury, as happened at Wednesday night's Village Board meeting, have no place in government business. You might not remember Christopher Falcone, 38, Havertown, Pa. Until we tell you Falcone is the drunken moron - er, enthusiastic hockey fan - who two years ago at a Philadelphia Flyers' game was screaming at Toronto Maple Leafs' player Tie Domi while Domi was sitting in the penalty box. Falcone was hanging from the glass partition separating fans from players, reaching over it, when the glass gave way and Falcone fell into the box. At which point Domi, who admittedly was screaming back at Falcone, and security people beat on the guy. Guess what? That's right, Falcone is suing Domi, the Leafs, the NHL and Comcast (which owns the Flyers and their home arena). Apparently no hot McDonald's coffee was spilled on him when he fell, or else we're sure the fast-food giant would have been named in the suit too.
