Champs and chumps

News-Chronicle

Champs

On Easter, Christians around the world should remember the person who made this holiday worth celebrating: He who gave his earthly life three days ago and is rising today to prove something to the rest of us.

And for our younger Opinion page readers, let's also not forget the Easter Bunny, who today is spreading joy, goodwill and sugar highs throughout civilization.

The Brown County Board finally seems to be moving again on the Mental Health Center decision: Allow new County Executive Carol Kelso 90 days "due diligence" to study the $32 million proposal, then let supervisors decide at that time if they want to vote on it (which we more than strongly recommend they do, one way or the other). Proponents and opponents are finally agreed that the time has come to do something, so let's get it done three months from now.

Chumps

A Web site sponsored by the Republican Party of Wisconsin ran a cartoon showing a tomahawk flying through the air at a state taxpayer, with the caption, "You got scalped," a reference to Democrat Gov. Jim Doyle's controversial gaming compact proposals with several Indian tribes. The cartoon was lifted from the site after rounds of protests, but you have to question the common sense of whoever approved putting something like that on, no matter your stance on the compacts issue.

Boy, the Great American Pastime must be angling for a weekly Chump. After the Baseball Hall of Fame was "honored" last week, now we have four presumably inebriated fans running onto the field at four different times during Wednesday's Kansas City Royals-Chicago White Sox game at U.S. Cellular Park in Chicago. This, of course, six months after a stoned father-son tag team of White Sox fans attacked Royals first base coach Tom Gamboa during a game. Let's see, where can we begin with the Chumps ...

— For starters, there's Gamboa. When asked if he was worried about returning to the place where he was ambushed, he said he wasn't, because "lightning doesn't strike twice in the same place." Oh, really? Way to put on the jinx, Coach.

— Then there's Eric Dybas, the moron, er, drunk, I mean, dedicated fan who jumped first base umpire Laz Diaz. Not just for the action, but because if you're going to ambush someone, you should probably pick a better target than a former Marine, accompanied by about 50 men with bats and spikes. Hope those cuts and wounds heal nicely for your court date.

— But while we strongly believe in personal responsibility (meaning if the fan jumps the railing, it's the fan's fault), where was stadium security? Especially in light of what happened last September? You know, stadium staff, there is a benefit to screwing up - learn something from it, so it doesn't happen again.
