Brown County Executive Carol Kelso will start work Monday on hiring a new human services director to replace Mark Quam, whose exit from the department was announced Friday.
Quam announced he will become human services director in Winnebago County. He had worked in Brown County for 10 years after coming from Winnebago County.
While saying the parting was "amicable," Kelso now has the chance to name a director more in tune with her own views on the fate of the Brown County Mental Health Center. The center's future is the center of a major debate in county government, which must upgrade the current aging facility or build anew. The issue is currently under a 90-day review. Kelso called Quam's exit "a mutual thing."
"We talked about issues, and he said he had a great opportunity. I never want to stand in the way of any advancement," she said. "I generally can work with people with a lot of different ideas. I don't know if we would have had any problems or not."
Kelso said the department will start advertising early next week for a replacement. Quam's last day is May 16.
"We'll put it on the fast track," she said. "We'll do at least a statewide search. It's one of our top positions; it controls the biggest portion of our budget, so we want to get someone who's one of the best and the brightest."
