Play causes stir in Wisconsin community

Associated Press

CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (AP) - A planned performance of "The Vagina Monologues" has a raised a storm of criticism from residents who called the play morally offensive.

A student group from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire was scheduled to perform the play Friday night at the Fill-Inn Station.

Eve Ensler's off-Broadway play, written in 1996, is based on a series of interviews about real-life joys and problems of being a woman. It celebrates female sexuality and explores issues such as sexual violence against women.

One of the Fill-Inn Station's owners, Linda Roycraft, said the restaurant has received calls and letters complaining about the play being performed there.

Roycraft said the restaurant already lost one booking. Notre Dame Church canceled an upcoming banquet because of the production, Roycraft said. The Rev. James Benzmiller of Notre Dame declined to comment.

"I didn't think we'd get this big of a hoopla out of it," Roycraft said.

Roycraft said she thinks the play's title is upsetting people.

The play's title could make some people uneasy, said Lindsay Krueger, a member of the student group performing the play.

"But some people see the title and get curious about it," Krueger said.

The student group, Mosaic, staged two performances of the play on campus earlier this year, but Friday's scheduled performance was to be the first traveling show, Krueger said.

The Family Support Center is sponsoring the play as part of its sexual assault awareness month. Executive Director Geri Segal said she's confident local residents will understand the need to show the play for educational reasons.

"I don't view it as a controversial thing," Segal said.
