It's not what your local letter carrier will be dropping off Saturday that's important; it's what will be picked up - if you do your part.
U.S. Postal Service letter carriers will participate in the annual Letter Carriers Food Drive on Saturday, collecting items for area food pantries.
Organizers hope to top the 237,000 pounds of food collected in Northeast Wisconsin last year.
Bags of food items should be placed near your mailbox by 9 a.m. Saturday, although the food may not be collected at the same time the mail is delivered, said Vicki Lewis, local representative of the National Association of Letter Carriers.
"We'll have friends and volunteers helping out with the pickup, sometimes riding with the letter carriers, sometimes coming before or after them," she said. "They're especially needed for the walking (mail) routes."
Organizers want nonperishable foods, especially canned tuna, soups and stews, cereal, macaroni and cheese and other boxed meals and peanut butter. Organizers ask that there be no glass containers included.
Food pantries in the Green Bay area include the Salvation Army Food Pantry, Manna for Life Pantry and church pantries at First Presbyterian Church, St. Patrick's Catholic Church, First United Methodist Church, Resurrection Lutheran Church, Seventh-day Adventist Church, Grace Lutheran Church, Calvary Lutheran Church, Faith Builders Church, Trinity Lutheran Church and St. John Lutheran Church.
"There are about 20 more families every month coming into pantries," Lewis said.
Area communities participating include Abrams, Casco, Denmark, Little Suamico, Luxemburg, New Franken, Oneida, Pulaski, Seymour and Wrightstown.
