The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay held its 33rd spring commencement Saturday at the outdoor amphitheater on the university campus, handing out 720 diplomas to the school's largest graduating class.
Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton was the featured speaker at Saturday afternoon's event. Lawton, a former UWGB student, told the class to be active citizens.
"You will one day govern this society," she said. "We need you to be judicious and wise."
Other speakers included student Christopher Barlow of Green Bay and Outstanding Student Award recipient Chad Griepentrog of Spencer.
University chancellor Bruce Shepard presented Chancellor's Awards to Thomas Olson and Gary Weidner. Olson is a charter member of the Chancellor's Council of Trustees and has been associated with the university since 1988.
Weidner's wife, Ellen, accepted the award for her late husband, who died in January. He had longtime associations with the university; his father, Edward Weidner, was the university's first chancellor.
The university has awarded nearly 21,000 diplomas in its history.
