Post-secondary schools offer summer programs

News-Chronicle

UWGB, NWTC and St. Norbert College are hosting a variety of classes for all ages The News-Chronicle

In addition to the regular summer curriculum they offer their enrolled students, all three local post-secondary schools will be holding summer programs for people of all ages.

St. Norbert College is offering courses for credit and non-credit. Summer session courses are the duration of three weeks, five weeks and special courses that vary in length. Courses are available to college students and high school students, regardless of whether they plan to enroll at the college in the future.

Three-week courses begin June 9. Five-week courses begin June 30. Classes vary and are offered in fields such as art, business administration, chemistry, communication, economics, English, history, music, philosophy, political science, psychology and religious studies. For more information about summer courses, call 403-4075.

Some special courses planned at St. Norbert include Kids' College, a summer enrichment program for students with learning disabilities and a master of theological studies program.

The Kids' College, which is for children in kindergarten through sixth grade, will be held June 16-20 and July 7-11. Courses, which range from arts and crafts to outdoor skills, are offered 9:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. Students may enroll in one or two classes each session.

The registration fee is $65 per class and includes material fees. The deadline to register is June 2. To register or for a complete list of classes, call 403-3590.

The college also is accepting enrollments for the master of theological studies program running June 23-July 17. The graduate program includes five areas of concentration, including liturgy, pastoral ministry, religious education, youth ministry and spiritual direction.

The program results in a certificate specialization, certificate of theological competency, non-degree option or a master of theological studies. For more information, call 403-3957.

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay also has several summer programs planned, many of which are for children. Middle school children who love to write can expand their writing skills at the Young Writers Workshop June 15-27.

The residential workshop is open to students entering grades 6-8. Students will write every day, including private journal writing and short pieces to share with classmates. The course includes field trips.

Spanish-speaking students who would like to learn how to make films and videos can apply to attend Stars of the Future June 15-27. The bilingual Spanish-English residential camp is open to students entering grades 7-9.

Students will begin with the concept phase and work through writing, acting, filming and editing. Each student will take home a video in English and Spanish of their final production.

The Multicultural Middle Level Pre-College Program July 6-18 uses Legos to help middle school students gain math and science skills. In addition to polishing math and science skills, campers will explore careers and learn how to select a college and apply for financial aid.

Students in UWGB's Young Writers Workshop, Stars of the Future program and Multicultural Middle Level Pre-College Program will live in supervised university housing and have meals in dining facilities for the entire camp period. Scholarships are available. For more information about any of the three programs, call 465-2671.

The university also is offering a Spanish Immersion Language and Culture Camp July 13-18. The camp is for students entering grades 7-12 and will provide beginning, intermediate or advanced learners with an in-depth knowledge of Spanish.

Students will participate in language sessions with others who have the same level of proficiency. Evening programs and activities will provide hands-on cultural experiences from diverse Spanish-speaking cultures.

Students may attend as residents living in supervised university housing and eating in dining facilities on the campus or as commuters providing their own daily transportation. For more information or to register, call 465-2267 or visit www.uwgbsummercamps.com.
