A 23-year-old Green Bay man accused of carjacking a woman at gunpoint was bound over for trial after appearing at a preliminary hearing Thursday.
Following the testimony of three witnesses, Brown County Circuit Court Commissioner Jane Sequin ruled there was enough probable cause to pursue criminal charges against Angelo Fox, who was arrested earlier this month in connection with an April 22 carjacking and armed robbery.
According to the criminal complaint, Fox was hitching a ride to Kellogg Street with the friend of an acquaintance when he decided to rob the female driver in front of his girlfriend's house. The complaint said he spotted a wad of cash in the victim's purse when she opened it to retrieve a cigarette.
Testifying at the preliminary hearing, a Green Bay woman who identified herself as the carjacking victim gave a more detailed account of the incident.
The woman said she had met Fox for the first time on April 22 while she was visiting a friend's house. As she was getting ready to leave, the woman's friends talked her into giving the suspect a ride to his girlfriend's house. During the 10-minute trip across town, the woman said Fox made little conversation with her and remained silent for most of the way.
When they reached his girlfriend's house on Kellogg Street, Fox disappeared around the side of the house. A few minutes later, he returned to the car and told the woman they'd have to wait a moment. At that point, he asked the woman for a cigarette. The woman said she was reaching for her cigarette lighter when she suddenly felt Fox press a gun against her head.
Through a stream of tears, the woman recited what she believed were Fox's precise words: "(Expletive), give me your money ... I'm not playing with you; I will shoot you."
After handing over $690 in cash she was saving for car repairs, the woman got out of the car and fled as the suspect sped away. The vehicle, a 1988 Pontiac 6000, belonged to the woman's roommate.
After the incident was over, the woman said she ran for help and flagged down a patrol car on the corner of Mather Street and Ashland Avenue.
On May 4, Fox was arrested by police when an officer spotted him driving around in what appeared to be the stolen vehicle. With the help of a police dog, the officer caught Fox as he was trying to hurdle a fence on South Chestnut Avenue in an effort to evade arrest.
In addition to carjacking and robbery, Fox is being charged with one felony count of operating a motor vehicle without the owner's consent and two misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest.
Fox's next scheduled court appearance is a July 7 arraignment. At that time, he will be asked to plea to the charges.
HEARINGS RESCHEDULED
In other court proceedings Thursday, hearings were rescheduled for shooting suspect Nathaniel Ford and robbery suspect Jason Jakubowski.
Ford's May 12 initial hearing had been adjourned until Thursday, but he is seeking a public defender, and the continuation of his initial hearing was moved to June 5.
Jakubowski, charged with armed robbery, will have his preliminary hearing June 13.
