Starting this fall, drivers traveling through Sturgeon Bay on their way to Door County should plan to leave a few minutes early.
About four miles of State 42/57 in Sturgeon Bay will be repaved, which is planned to start this fall and continue through the summer of 2004.
The project is estimated to cost $1.6 million and will include repaving of the road and bridge decks. It is designed to extend the life of the road.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation said in a press release that the project could significantly impact traffic traveling to Door County.
The road will remain open to traffic throughout the project, but sections might be reduced to one lane with flaggers directing traffic.
Traffic will be impacted in the following areas:
- Traffic over the Bayview Bridge will be reduced to one lane between April 1 and June 30 next year. Traffic signals will regulate traffic over the bridge.
- Traffic in the construction zone south of the Bayview Bridge will be reduced to one lane in each direction.
- Traffic in the two-lane section north of the Bayview Bridge will be reduced to one lane during daylight hours.
- Lane widths on the bridges will be limited to 14 feet. Loads up to 15 feet can pass if special accommodations are made. Loads over 15 feet wide will have to pass before April 1 or after June 30, 2004.
The project will also affect marine traffic. The Bayview Bridge will open every hour on the hour from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Operators of large commercial and public vessels must give a two-hour notice by calling 920-743-8141.
Two three-day closures are planned between April 15 and June 15. No boats will be able to pass during that time.
