The University of Wisconsin's Sea Grant Institute will receive $1.93 million from the National Sea Grant College Program to support the second year of its federally approved 2002-2004 program.
With the help of the State of Wisconsin and private donations, the grant will support more than 24 research projects related to the Great Lakes and involving more than 100 faculty, staff and students at six campuses within the UW system, including UW-Green Bay.
"With this grant, we can continue addressing Wisconsin's most important Great Lakes issues," said UW Sea Grant director Anders Andren. "In particular, we are focusing on slowing the spread of aquatic invasive species like zebra mussels and developing state-of-the-art aquaculture techniques for raising yellow perch."
The grant also will go toward UW Sea Grant-sponsored research on fisheries management, food webs and population dynamics, as well as scuba-diver safety.
