Cumulus Media Inc. is in the process of adding country music to its local radio group.
The chain is in the process of purchasing WPKR-FM 99.5, serving the Oshkosh market, and its rebroadcast station, WPCK-FM 104.9, licensed to Denmark but serving the Green Bay area.
The Atlanta-based chain hopes to start running the station under a local marketing agreement "in a few weeks" while waiting for final FCC approval, said Greg Jessen, general manager for Cumulus in Green Bay.
The company already owns WOGB-FM 103.1, WQLH-FM 98.5, WXWX-FM 107.5, WJLW-FM 106.7 and WDUZ-AM 1400. In the Appleton-Oshkosh market, it owns WOSH-AM 1490, WVBO-FM 103.9, WNAM-AM 1280 and WWWX-FM 96.9.
The Oshkosh-based station, owned by Midwest Dimensions Inc., broadcasts "Continuous Hit Country." Its call letters and those of its sister station were chosen to salute the Green Bay Packers, and the station has used "Packer Country" as a slogan.
A few years ago, Midwest Dimensions bought WKFX-FM and started simulcasting its WPKR programming as WPCK. It also moved its transmitter to north of Denmark and listed itself as serving that community, although the real goal was to serve Green Bay.
Jessen said there would be no immediate format changes until Cumulus had a chance to look over the station's operations. Final approval of the sale, however, may take a while.
"Of course, you have the new FCC rulings (on station ownership)," Jessen said. The rules, announced last week, limit the number of stations a chain can own in one market.
"I think they're going to take every new application as a test case for a while," Jessen said.
Cumulus is the nation's second-largest radio chain behind Clear Channel of San Antonio, Texas, and owns or is in the process of owning 267 stations in 55 markets.
