Champs Sometimes, the best ideas are ones we bring from our own experience. That may happen with the June 25 "Kids Day" in Green Bay, which came from a family celebration Mayor Jim Schmitt holds. With free events all over the city, it's a nice change from the "nothing to do/I need some money" cry parents hear. The "Amber Alert" system has been spreading nationally, but Colorado has added a nice touch. State lottery machines have been made part of the system, flashing alerts as they happen. It's a bigger contribution than most lotteries make. The Green Bay Packers showed a bit of class when they didn't sell all of their "Brown County-only" allotment of Lambeau Field seats. They made sure the tickets that weren't sold were assigned to exhibition games, thus giving those who sent in their $204 a better shot at regular-season play. Chumps The lengthy debate in the Green Bay City Council over the selling of an apartment building financed in part by tax increment financing (in this case, using property taxes to pay back a $3.3 million advance by the city) shows how little the council members know about the issue. And that's scary. (And an extra Chump to Guy Zima who excoriated developer Randall Alexander for "abandoning downtown." Seems to us the building isn't going anyplace, even if the owner's selling it.) Benton Harbor, Mich., was wracked by riots this week caused when Terrence Shurn, an African American man on a motorcycle being chased by police, crashed and died. While we're sympathetic to the man's family, it's worth remembering that the whole thing would not have happened had the man - who police said was riding at 100 mph - merely stopped when the police asked him to. Religious groups are protesting the use of Ellen DeGeneres as a voice in the Disney movie "Finding Nemo" because of her, ah, non-male-orientated life style. Folks, she's providing the voice of a FISH! (Now if it was one of those kissing fish, you might be on to something ... )
