Champs and chumps

News-Chronicle

Champs
For all of our griping about the Brown County Board, supervisors did the right thing in authorizing six new positions at the troubled 911 center.+ The fact that anyone in this enlightened age has to work a 10-hour day at such a high-stress job is ridiculous. We should probably be grateful the board didn't ship the jobs to Malaysia.

Marie Micheau is showing one woman can make a difference. She's fighting to ban drivers from talking on cell phones. Unfortunately, it took the death of her daughter to turn Marie into an advocate. The story reminds one of Candy Lightner, the founder of Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

Three Wisconsin natives were nominated for Emmy awards Thursday. Jane Kaczmarek of Greendale was tabbed for best lead actress in a comedy for her role as Lois in Fox's "Malcolm in the Middle." Her husband, Bradley Whitford of Madison, was nominated for best supporting actor in a drama series. Whitford plays deputy chief of staff Josh Lyman on the NBC drama "The West Wing," a role in which he earned an Emmy two years ago. And, last but definitely not least, Green Bay native Tony Shalhoub was a first-time nominee for best lead actor in a comedy series for his role as Adrian Monk on the USA series "Monk."

Chumps

Whether or not you think hot dog carts should be on the streets, you have to admit the City Council has truly mishandled the situation, continually changing closing times and devoting long hours of arguing to an "emergency" situation that's been existing for seven years. Thank goodness, the decision on the ordinance should put all this behind us.

The Republican proposal to allow anyone in Wisconsin to carry a concealed weapon is ridiculous. What would be the reason? You want to lure a deer to you by keeping the rifle under your blaze-orange coat? The only reason to conceal a weapon is to surprise someone you want to shoot. And if we have a lot of residents who want to shoot people, there's something wrong.
