A restitution hearing involving former Kewaunee County Highway Commissioner Jim Jadin, who pleaded no contest April 28 to three counts of misconduct in office, has been set for Oct. 14 before Door County Judge D. Todd Ehlers.
Jadin, 59, faced two misdemeanor misconduct counts, while his excavating company, J. Jadin Inc., had been charged with a felony related to when he headed the Kewaunee County Highway Department.
He has paid $2,755 in fines and court costs for the charges, but not an amount for restitution - to be paid to Kewaunee County - related to the misconduct. The sentence imposed by Ehlers didn't involve jail time. Jadin, who retired as highway commissioner in 1999, was accused between summer 1996 and December 1998 of taking county gravel and using county equipment for his private projects, as well as assigning county employees on jobs for his excavating company.
Ehlers was assigned to preside over the felony and misdemeanor cases after Kewaunee County Judge Dennis J. Mleziva had requested a substitute judge.
Door County District Attorney Tim Funnell has handled the cases as a special prosecutor because Kewaunee County District Attorney Troy Dalebroux, whom court records note had been a summertime highway department worker, did not handle the matter to avoid a possible conflict of interest.
