Brown County residents can show their support of local law enforcement agencies' crime-prevention efforts during a variety of events Tuesday in the area.
Neighborhoods throughout Green Bay and the surrounding areas are joining forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the 20th annual National Night Out.
The national event is designed to heighten awareness for crime- and drug-prevention programs, generate support for local anticrime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police and community partnerships, and send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized against crime.
Ten Neighborhood Watch groups throughout Green Bay have planned events, including block parties, neighborhood picnics, ice cream socials and flashlight walks. From 7-10 p.m., Brown County residents are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors.
In De Pere, a community-wide event is being held from 4:30-8:30 p.m. at Voyageur Park. Activities include demonstrations by Wisconsin Public Service at 5:15 p.m., the Brown County Sheriff's Department K-9 unit at 6 p.m. and the De Pere Fire and Rescue Department at 7:30 p.m.
The event will feature 22 informational booths with such participating organizations as Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and Brown County Crime Prevention. Children's activities will include a dunk tank, games, an appearance by McGruff the crime dog and a puppet show about the harmful effects of drugs and alcohol at 6:45 p.m.
