The Roman Catholic Diocese of Green Bay issued a response Monday to protesters who stood in front of St. Francis Xavier Cathedral on Sunday to distribute leaflets about sexual abuse by priests.
The protest was sponsored by Survivors Network for those Abused by Priests.
Protesters handed out leaflets supporting bills being considered by the Wisconsin Legislature that would add clergy to the list of mandatory reporters of child neglect or abuse and extend the statute of limitations in such cases. The extended time to bring charges would also give victims more time to sue in civil cases. The bill also clarifies that victims may sue religious organizations including churches and dioceses for actions of offending clergy.
The statement said the Wisconsin Catholic Conference, which represents the five Catholic dioceses in the state, the Wisconsin Council of Churches, the Wisconsin Jewish Conference and Green Bay Bishop Robert Banks also supported the bills.
It also said the diocese had instituted a zero-tolerance policy toward abuse and had implemented programs to deal with the issue.
The protest at the cathedral - chosen as the home church of Banks - was led by David Schauer of Marshfield, whose court case against the diocese and former Green Bay priest Donald Buzanowski was dismissed last month because Schauer was too late in claming damages under state law.
