The second of two suspects accused of going on a dynamite-enhanced vandalism spree through rural Brown County last fall pleaded innocent Friday to three counts of arson.
If convicted, 32-year-old Kevin Stein and his co-defendant, 30-year-old Louie Kroll, could face up to 60 years in prison and fines for each count.
A criminal complaint accuses the men of purchasing sticks of dynamite and M-80 explosives at a local bar on Oct. 25, and then joyriding through rural Bellevue, where they tossed the explosives into several mailboxes. The complaint said the defendants decided to blow up mailboxes because "it would be fun," according to a statement Stein allegedly gave police.
The men allegedly kicked off the vandalism spree by blowing up the mailbox of an acquaintance Stein had an argument with earlier that day. The complaint said the men destroyed about a half-dozen mailboxes before exhausting their dynamite supply.
Police confronted the suspects about the crimes after a victim claimed he caught the men in the act.
The complaint said the victim was gazing out his window when he noticed a dark-colored truck drive up to his mailbox. A few seconds later, his mailbox exploded, scattering debris and the scent of gunpowder throughout his yard.
The man was able to make out the license plates number on the suspect vehicle before the truck drove away, the complaint said.
Both Stein and Kroll are scheduled to stand trial for the felony charges on Dec. 8.
