With less than a month before the trial of a Denmark teenager charged with first-degree intentional homicide is scheduled to get under way in Kewaunee County Circuit Court, assistant district attorney Elma Anderson said she is preparing to prosecute the case herself.
Anderson has already handled much of the pretrial proceedings involving Kent Kuss, 18, who is accused of fatally shooting Jason Gretzon, 22, of Denmark.
Kewaunee County has been without a district attorney since the end of August following the resignation of Troy Dalebroux, who said he wanted to pursue other opportunities. Kuss' trial had been set to begin Sept. 15, but Judge Dennis J. Mleziva granted an adjournment until Nov. 3 following Dalebroux's resignation.
That incident allegedly occurred early in the morning on May 19, 2002, near the intersection of County V and Langes Corners Road in the town of Franklin.
Even if Gov. Jim Doyle would appoint a new district attorney before the beginning of November, Anderson said the person receiving the appointment wouldn't be familiar with the case.
Five candidates submitted their names by Sept. 10 to be considered for the appointment. They include: Gary R. Hassel, Algoma; John F. Peterson, Green Bay; Shane Laughton Brabazon, Green Bay; Andrew Peter Naze, Green Bay; and Jeffrey R. Wisnicky, Kewaunee.
Doyle's deputy press secretary, Jessica Erickson, said last week an appointments team had yet to narrow the candidates to two or three finalists for the governor to interview before making the appointment.
Kewaunee County isn't the only county in the state with a district attorney vacancy. Anderson said Juneau County has been without a district attorney since June.
