The Neville Museum could have free admission one day a month and during the first hour of each weekday to offset the possible instatement of admission fees.
The Brown County Museum Subcommittee decided Thursday morning to recommend allowing free admission on the first Sunday of the month and for the first hour of operation Tuesdays through Fridays.
The museum could begin charging admission of $4 for adults and $2 for children to offset operating costs to the county if the County Board includes the provision in its budget. The County Board will discuss the county budget, and possibly vote on it, on Nov. 12.
The subcommittee decided a free day on Sundays would benefit county residents coming with their families instead of groups of school children coming on field trips.
The subcommittee considered selecting a weekday to accommodate school children visiting on trips, but decided more Brown County residents would be able to visit the museum over the weekends. Saturdays usually have a higher number of visitors, so admissions collected would benefit the museum more than Sundays.
"We need to give a chance for everyone to get here," said Sup. Joe Van Deurzen. The first hour of operation is typically slow for the museum and free admission at that time would benefit stay-at-home parents bringing in their children.
The free admission would not affect school groups being bused to the museum. Schools are charged $35 for a busload of one to 30 students and $50 for groups of 31 or more.
The museum is also looking at expanding its hours of operation. All of the proposed changes must be voted on by the County Board.
