The study shows the state's black residents are more likely to be stricken with cancer and die from it than whites. The study looked at state and national records from 1996-2000. Black men are twice as likely to die from lung and prostate cancer and three times as likely to die from stomach cancer. Black women are afflicted with cervical cancer at twice the rate of their white counterparts and the mortality rate is triple. The study says the disparities stand out because Wisconsin has less poverty, less joblessness and high levels of health insurance. Potential factors are disparities in health care screening, hormonal patterns, obesity, lifestyle and socioeconomic factors, according to the study.
