Investigators from the Green Bay Police and Brown County Sheriff's departments are trying to determine if there is any correlation between two incidents of rape and attempted abduction that occurred early Thursday morning.
Green Bay Police responded to a sexual assault just after 5:30 a.m. Thursday at Royal Cleaners, 2581 W. Mason St. A 32-year-old female employee was approached from behind when she was opening the back door to the business, said Lt. Jim Arts of the Green Bay Police Department.
The suspect covered the woman's head with a white cloth bag and threatened her with a knife. He pulled her into a more secluded location, where he raped her, Arts said.
He left on foot and likely left the area in a vehicle. The Oneida K-9 Unit traced the suspect to Trojan and Eldora drives behind the store, but lost track of him. Police suspect he had a car waiting for him and left the area.
"It's not likely this was random," Arts said. "He obviously had to have cased this, he would know she was coming at this time."
He said the victim was treated and released from the hospital.
"She is not physically seriously injured in any way, but obviously this is very traumatic," Arts said.
The suspect was dressed in black and his head was covered with a hood. He is described as a male, possibly white, with a small stature.
The Brown County Sheriff's Department responded to a similar call at 6:18 a.m. Thursday at Curves for Women, 1845 Velp Ave.
In that incident, the victim was walking up to Curves when a male assailant came up behind her, put his hands over her mouth and pulled her toward his chest, said Lt. Scott Semb of the Brown County Sheriff's Department.
"She knew it was a male with a dark hooded sweatshirt - she couldn't see his face, but he was wearing dark pants, possibly jeans," Semb said. "We don't know if (the incidents) are connected or not."
He said the K-9 dog unit traced the suspect to Glenview Avenue, where it lost trace of him.
The police and sheriff's departments are both investigating the incidents to see if they are related.
Anyone with information is asked to call the police department at 448-3200 or 448-3201.
