CHAMPS It was good to finally see a presidential candidate up here, Wesley Clark. It was also good to see more than 350 people come out to see him almost a year before the election. Notre Dame Academy's Joe Walker is a Champ, of course, as are his teammates. But Walker added to the laurels with state AP Player of the Year honors this week, including a unanimous choice as a first-team tight end. A new program, Kids Cafe, at the Boys and Girls Club offers free hot meals after school to kids who might be home alone while their parents are at work. ConAgra is the sponsor of a first-rate idea. CHUMPS We enjoy the tradition of Thanksgiving football as much as anybody. But going to Detroit twice in three years? Hey, NFL, maybe it's time for some turkey in Green Bay - or at least, a larger rotation of teams. (The Packers, by the way, have played on Thanksgiving 30 times - fourth most in the NFL behind Detroit, Dallas and Chicago - but haven't played a home Thanksgiving game since 1923.) When there was a prison building boom a few years ago, many people predicted the prisons would soon be filled. Who knew it would be with the likes of Michael Jackson and Glen Campbell? And a Chump to the cable news networks for, at a time of war and economic travail, devoting more time to Jacko as criminal than they have to his career. The lowlight came with enough coverage of Jackson's plane landing to turn one off to aviation entirely. Or was it the interview with Jackson's personal magician? This may make us long for the calm, civilized atmosphere of the O.J. Simpson trial.
