Thomas Bolin, associate professor of Religious Studies at St. Norbert College, had his article "The Making of the Holy City: On the Foundations of Jerusalem in the Hebrew Bible," published in the collection Jerusalem in Ancient History and Tradition.
The collection has been published in both English and in Arabic translation. Bolin's contribution to the volume examines how the biblical authors understood and justified Jerusalem's status as a holy city in the three centuries prior to the birth of Jesus.
The origins of the article lie in an invitation Bolin was given to read a paper on the role of Jerusalem in the Hebrew Bible at a conference that was held in October 2001 in Amman, Jordan. The conference also featured papers by some of the leading biblical scholars in the world from institutions in Europe and the United States. The events of Sept. 11, 2001, prohibited Bolin from attending the conference in Amman, but he was able to read the paper later at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark.
