More than a year after he decided not to seek re-election, former Kewaunee County Sheriff Dennis "Bucky" Zuege is running for the county board. Zuege has taken out nomination papers to run for the District 18 seat held by Nancy Lazansky.
Zuege, who previously was a sheriff's department deputy, was first elected sheriff in 1996 and served three two-year terms before deciding not to seek re-election last year. Lazansky has been on the county board since winning in the January 2000 recall election, which came about over opposition to build a new justice center.
A supervisor who lost in the 2000 recall, but was elected back onto the board in 2002, George Kruse, has taken out nomination papers to seek his second consecutive two-year term in District 12. He represents Wards 1 and 2 in the town of West Kewaunee.
A supervisor who was ousted from his school board seat in the Algoma School District last April wants to win his second straight term on the county board. Larry Kirchman, who represents the town of Lincoln, was first elected to the county board in 2002 after defeating the then-incumbent, Cora Purdy.
She had served two-plus years on the board after being elected in the 2000 recall election.
Candidates were allowed to begin circulating nomination papers for the 20 county board seats on Monday. The deadline to file the papers is Jan. 6 at 5 p.m. Nomination papers must have 20 to 100 valid signatures in order for a county board candidate's name to be placed on the spring election ballot, said County Clerk Linda Teske.
The spring general election is set for April 6. In races where it will be necessary to narrow the field of candidates, primaries will be held on Feb. 17.
