In introducing a new logo for the Green Bay Area School District, Joseph Bergner of the design firm Imaginasium showed off his own school picture, circa 1982.
"I've finally grown into my nose," he joked.
And just as he had outgrown his picture, the Green Bay district had outgrown its 1982 logo. Graphically clunky, it wasn't what the school wanted when it started last year to take a look at its mission and image.
With the help of some free work from Imaginasium, that's changing.
The district unveiled its new logo Thursday. It features a tree as the theme, with a large human figure making up the trunk (a teacher) and smaller figures (students) the branches, with leaves in various shades of green filling out the tree.
Below that and the district's name is a new slogan: "All learning. All growing."
It comes from the school's revised mission statement and plan, said Superintendent Dan Nerad.
"It's a way to translate to help the public understand what our standards and plans are," he said.
Kory Lax, who designed the logo, developed four different designs, with the district making the final choice.
"The students seem to burst out of the tree. You feel like they're ready to launch into the real world," he said.
"It contains a lot of energy and a lot of dynamism," Bergner added.
The logo will appear on school letterheads, business cards and other documents, gradually spreading to district vehicles and other areas.
The old logo had "Green Bay Area" in thin letters in the top half of a circle, "Public Schools in the bottom half. The two halves were separated by a thin stripe with a motto. When the logo was done by an unknown person in 1982, it read "Building a winning tradition," but that was changed a few years ago to "Building a learning tradition."
