Kewaunee County Sheriff’s Department officer Steve Gilray picked a tough weekend to camp out, but it was worth it. He raised $5,000 for Special Olympics.
Gilray, of Luxemburg, took the Rooftop Torch Run Challenge and spent 55 hours on the roof of the Bay Park ShopKo store this weekend. Shoppers donated money and talked to Gilray over the course of the weekend.
“Friday was probably the worst day,” Gilray said. Temperatures dropped to 2 degrees below zero, Gilray said he was told.
With the warmth of two space heaters donated by ShopKo and a tent to block the wind, Gilray made it through two nights on the roof. He came down at about 2 p.m. Sunday.
He said he had spent time in the cold while in the military and at a cabin without heat before, but he hadn’t camped in the winter. Worse than the cold, the loneliness made the weekend a little long, he said.
“Saturday, at about 8 p.m., it slowed down, so it got pretty lonely,” Gilray said. He was visited on the roof by other officers and shoppers, which kept him busy during the day. “People were very generous and they talked a lot,” he said.
Gilray has been involved with the Special Olympics for several years through the Torch Run. He said ShopKo has also been generous over the years.
Gilray said he’ll probably hand off the challenge to other officers next year and he has started recruiting for the event already.
