Inmate accused of tavern burglaries receives additional prison time

Brother placed on probation for burglary conviction

By Kevin Boneske
For The News-Chronicle

A Denmark man accused of three tavern burglaries reported in Kewaunee County during 2001 has received a prison term concurrent with a sentence he is presently serving in the state prison system.

Christopher Johnson, 22, was sentenced Friday in Kewaunee County Circuit Court on six felony burglary counts — three involving break-ins in the county and three others consolidated from a Brown County case — to five years of initial confinement in prison, followed by 10 years of extended supervision.

Kewaunee County Assistant District Attorney Elma Anderson said the sentence imposed will add about a year of prison time to what Johnson is currently serving.

Johnson has been in the Green Bay Correctional Institution serving time for a Brown County conviction. His brother, Brian Johnson, 23, who is serving a prison sentence in the Oshkosh Correctional Institution, also was accused of being involved in the three tavern break-ins in Kewaunee County.

Brian Johnson on Thursday was placed on seven years of probation with a seven-year sentence — three years of initial incarceration in prison and four years of extended supervision — imposed and stayed for his burglary conviction. A year in jail has also been stayed as a condition of his probation.

Anderson said Brian Johnson would be released on probation upon his prison sentence ending next year.

According to the court complaint, Christopher and Brian Johnson broke into the former Mustang Shelly’s in the village of Luxemburg on May 26, 2001, the 54 Run in the town of Luxemburg on June 24, 2001, and The Waterfront in the city of Kewaunee on Nov. 24, 2001. All three establishments reported damage to machines inside and the theft of money, which ranged from several hundred to thousands of dollars.

Anderson said the Johnson brothers are responsible for the restitution involving the three taverns in Kewaunee County, which amounts to around $30,000, while Christopher Johnson also would be responsible for about $5,000 in restitution involving three tavern burglaries in Brown County.
