Another county supervisor decides not to seek re-election

By Kevin Boneske
For The News-Chronicle

The Kewaunee County Board will have a turnover rate of at least 10 percent after next spring’s elections.

District 15 Supervisor Paula Levy, who represents Wards 4 and 5 in the city of Algoma, on Monday filed a notification of noncandidacy with the county clerk’s office.

Levy joins District 5 Supervisor Jonas Barbiaux, who represents Ward 1 in the village of Luxemburg, in not running for re-election. Both have been on the county board since 2000. Out of the 20 county supervisor seats, contested races are shaping up in four of them where more than one candidate took out nomination papers as of Monday afternoon.

In District 8, which includes Ward 1 in the town of Luxemburg and Ward 3 in the town of Montpelier, challenger Gordon Reckelberg has filed nomination papers for the seat presently held by Charles Froelich, who has begun circulating papers.

In the District 12 seat in West Kewaunee, incumbent George Kruse is being challenged by Paul Junio. Both have filed papers. Junio had ousted Kruse in 2000, before Kruse won the seat back in 2002.

In District 17, which includes Ward 7 in the city of Algoma and Ward 2 in the town of Pierce, longtime incumbent Rose Quinlan and challenger Brian Paplham have both taken out nomination papers. Quinlan also chairs the Pierce Town Board, while Paplham is a town supervisor.

In District 18, which includes Ward 1 in the city of Kewaunee and Ward 1 in the town of Pierce, incumbent Nancy Lazansky faces a challenge from former Sheriff Dennis “Bucky” Zuege. Lazansky has been on the county board since 2000, while Zuege was first elected county sheriff in 1996 before deciding not to seek re-election last year.

District 6 Supervisor Janice Swoboda, who represents Ward 2 in the village of Luxemburg, and District 14 Supervisor James Barlow, who represents Wards 2 and 3 in the city of Algoma, have already filed nomination papers.

Other incumbents who have taken out papers include: LeVerle Koenig, District 1; Larry Kirchman, District 2; Charles Wagner, District 3; Robert Weidner, District 4; David Mayer, District 9; Linda Sinkula, District 11; Charles Hutter, District 16; and Kaye Shillin, District 20.

James Abrahamson has been circulating papers for the District 19 seat held by County Board Chairman Gerald Novickis.

Candidates have been able to circulate nomination papers since Dec. 1. The deadline to file the papers is at 5 p.m. Jan. 6, while county supervisors not running for re-election have until Dec. 29 to file a statement of noncandidacy.
