Due to above-freezing temperatures and rain literally putting a damper on snow-making operations, the Winter Park tubing hill just west of Kewaunee won't be opening until Dec. 27 at the earliest, said Kewaunee County promotion and recreation director Mark Kanz.
The snow-making machines began being used there earlier this month in the hope of opening the hill this coming weekend, but Kanz said the recent thaw has resulted in standing water at the hill's bottom.
"Mother Nature is not cooperating with us again," he said.
Kanz said the overnight lows need to drop into the teens in order to bring about conditions ideal for snow-making. With a couple of nights of those temperatures, he noted the hill could be readied in order to open.
Once the hill opens for tubing, Kanz said the hours of operation will be from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday and from noon-5 p.m. Sunday. He also noted plans are in the works, weather permitting, to open the hill a few weekdays between Christmas and New Year's Day, while weekdays could be reserved by groups for special events.
