Some coins are worth more than others. The Salvation Army got some of the better ones in its kettles recently.
An anonymous donor purchased three gold coins and nine 1920s and 1930s silver dollars from a Green Bay coin dealer, then dropped them - wrapped in paper dollar bills - into several kettle locations around the area.
The army took the coins to a local dealer - the same one, it found out, that had sold the coins. He repurchased them, and the money, reported at "several hundred dollars," went to the annual holiday campaign.
It helped, but the army is only at 58 percent of its $871,000 goal with a week to go. Contributions - everyday money is OK - can be dropped in the kettles or sent to The Salvation Army, 626 Union Court, Green Bay WI 54303.
- The Salvation Army is also falling short of its goal of 12,000 for its toy distribution next week at ShopKo Hall. The group has collected about 6,000 toys, with maybe 3,000 to be picked up from the Marine Corps "Toys for Tots" campaign.
Unwrapped toys may be brought to the army's center at 626 Union Court or at Toys for Tots collection points.
